Massage therapy, bodywork, somatics, and other self care techniques offer a holistic, proactive approach to health and wellness. By taking responsibility for your body, mind, and emotions, you can take charge of your life.
Massage can be an important component of your healthy living plan. It works on the soft tissues of your body, primarily muscles, but also tendons, ligaments, and the connective tissue called fascia, to create changes that release tension and provide many other massage therapy benefits.
Learn about the types of massage techniques.
Massage is just one part of the larger field of bodywork, which includes approaches such as rolfing, reflexology, and any technique that involves manipulating the body to bring about change. Bodywork is a generic way to refer to any technique that promotes well-being through a physical process.
While most bodywork is about someone manipulating your body to bring about change, somatics is about your personal relationship with your body. It's about how you live in your body and developing your awareness to recognize the feelings and sensations of your body.
The process of somatic education, which involves both movement on your own and the hands-on help of a trained practitioner, retrains your nervous system in a way that can relieve pain, help your body function better, and help you use your body more efficiently.
Somatics incorporates the mind-body connection and provides you with information that, among other things, can tell you what you need to do for self care. Self care as part of healthy living covers everything from how you deal with everyday stresses to your exercise program.
I'm a licensed massage practitioner and had an active practice from 1997 to 2009. Although this site started as a way to market my business, the site grew into more than a hundred pages of information about massage therapy and healthy living.
My intention is to provide information that you can use to become more relaxed, balanced, and pain free. The various approaches and techniques discussed can help you release tension and stress and remove muscle and fascial restrictions that interfere with how your body functions, while also increasing the circulation of both blood and energy in your body.
