Hello,

Summer finally arrived in Seattle on July 7! I hope you are having a great summer (or winter, if you are reading this from the southern hemisphere). This issue is a complilation of essential oil and aromatherapy tips. Enjoy!

Aromatherapy Tips

If you live in a mosquito-prone area, you might want to try these tips: To keep mosquitoes away from a space, diffuse lemon, peppermint, eucalyptus radiata, or lemongrass essential oil. To keep mosquitoes off of you, blend 1 drop of citronella oil to each 4 drops of vegetable oil or lotion and apply to exposed skin as needed.

Feeling a little forgetful? Sniffing or diffusing spicy essential oils such as cinnamon, cardamom, rosemary, peppermint, or basil may be helpful.

Arthritis? Aromatherapy for Dummies recommends the following aromatherapy recipe for arthritis: add 3 drops of rosemary, 3 drops of marjoram, and 2 drops of ginger to your hot bath and enjoy the soak. You can also just soak your feet or hands in a basin of water with one drop of each of those oils.

Dangers of Aromatherapy Candles

Do you like aromatherapy candles? Here are three reasons why you might want to reconsider:

  • Most candles are made of paraffin, an unhealthy petroleum by-product. If you use candles for any reason, use only ones made of soy or beeswax.
  • If the candle has a metal wick (rather than a cotton one), it's likely releasing lead into the air.
  • Most likely, the aroma is a synthetic scent that even unburned is toxic. Even if it's real essential oil, many experts believe burning essential oils reduces their therapeuic value.

Most people use aromatherapy candles because they like the scent. You can have the scent without the toxins by using an aromatherapy diffuser.
